Poker is a card game based on a combination of chance and strategy. The name probably derives from the French phrase poque d’un jeton, meaning “I bet one unit”.

It is human nature to want to make a big call or try an ill-advised bluff and this is where a lot of bad sessions start. To avoid this you must constantly go through your hand history files and review your play in the most objective manner possible. This will help you identify areas where you could have improved and also save you from repeating the same mistakes over and over again.
It is also important to understand how variance affects your game. This is the factor that will cause you to lose a large percentage of your hands but also the reason why you will win some. Variance can be explained in mathematical terms but essentially it is the difference between risk and reward.
Another key factor is to learn to read the other players. This can be done by paying attention to how they play and by observing their reactions to the cards that are dealt. This will give you insight into what type of bluffs they are calling, how many times they are checking and how much they bluff when they have good cards.
